Gil-dong, the illegitimate son of Hong Pan-seo during the reign of King Jungjong of the Joseon Dynasty, unable to withstand the mistreatment of his uncle and grandmother, leaves home to visit the high monk Baekun-sa who lives in Mt. Geumgang. Gil-dong saves Dal-lae, who was in danger of being taken away by the village sato during the trip, and then accompanies the father and daughter. Gil-dong, who promised to meet Dal-rae again in five years, goes to Mt. Geumgang and devotes himself to practicing martial arts. Gil-dong robs government houses in all eight provinces of the country, scolds government officials who committed tyranny, and robs storehouses to distribute grain to the people. The government, desperate to catch Gil-dong, captures Gil-dong's biological mother and father and puts them in prison. Gildong, who was injured while trying to save his parents, regains his strength thanks to the sincerity of the gisaeng Wolhyang. Gil-dong challenges Seung-yeop, the son of Byeongjo Judge, who was appointed as the new Podo Commander, to a duel, and the two engage in a sword fight on a cliff. The victorious Gil-dong rescues his mother, who was about to be burned at the stake, and sets off on a boat with Dal-lae and her mother to find a new country.
