An adventurer's sojourn in London and his multifaceted and turbulent life from the salons of the English aristocracy where he "chased" the rich marriage to gold hunting in America. Manolis, having previously betrothed a girl from his village, Drosoula, to leave her as a servant to his mother, wanders off and tries everything in his turbulent life, from dowry hunting through a rich wedding in London, to gold in California. Having failed in everything, he returns after many adventures to his home town of Molyvos in Mytilene, where he was thought to have drowned in a shipwreck and recalls the past, while even Drossula now refuses to marry him.
